ZEICHNER-Log book 03.08.2000
Okay, Amsterdam broke our neck. If you talk
to a pedestrian in Amsterdam you are
classified into one of the following:
a) poor drug-addicted street artist
b) poor drug-addicted drug-dealer
c) poor drug-addicted opinion poll conducter.
Sure, it could be worse, but...
1. we don't have any fuel left 2. we don't have
dutch money 3. no parking without paying 4.
where will we sleep? (we slept in the car)

"There was this moment we sat in basket
chairs directly on the shore. Soft wind
caresses our skin. We blink into the blue sky
and think "we are the first, definitely the first,
who ever do a pyrography eurotour." A nice
moment.

The first city we have to get along with foreign
languages only. what a challenge. We are
invited to an expensive tourist restaurant for
a salad by the boss - he needs to have
somebody sitting in his restaurant so that
the tourists don't think something might be
wrong as nobody is sitting there...
we draw his staff, the bartering flourishes.
We draw until midnight, then off to Paris.

The tourists in Paris are over-loaded.
We sell five pictures on the Montmartre,
then four times that many on the fair.
The competition with the established
portrait artists we clearly win.

600 F money, 2 red wine, 1 crèpe

A nice police man tells us that we are not
allowed to work here. we leave, driving along
a queue of tourist cars of 6 kilometers length,
approximately the same as 2650 Francs
income...

We sell 3 portraits in 150 minutes. we don't
have money left, the fuel is expensive, the
French don't know sparklers at all, and they
hate trash-culture. We do consider to break
down the tour right there.
bartering's balance sheet:
5 big Breton beer, 1 bottle water, 620 F

We cross France with our last available
money (from Brussels - our only credit card
was eaten in a fuel station thing and we now
really don't have any back-up at all any more).
Emergency stop in Le Puy. During a testing
hour we sell exactly 2 portraits - one out of
pity, the other to a drunk. We have 80 Francs
left to reach Avignon. The strain of the last
days can be read off of our faces.

Avignon was better. Nice people. For the first
time our spirits are lifted a little. The only
place we find to sleep in/next to the tour
bus is a cemetery.

Again it is grossly pathetic. We remember
the peak income levels of the EXPO, Goethe's
birthday party in Weimar, the Hackesche
Höfe... and wake up in Nizza. At least we do
get something to eat by bartering.
